The spring season is always a busy one and this year is no
exception. Many of our Buckeye teams have competed at the
highest level while making us all very proud. The tennis team,
coached by Ty Tucker, has celebrated a championship in the
Big Ten and now heads into the NCAA tournament. Your
Varsity “O” Board has been busy too.
For the first time, the Varsity “O” will award a four thousand
dollar scholarship to a letterman who attends Ohio State for
post graduate study. Our newest board member, Garth Cox,
has done an exceptional job compiling scholarship criteria in
addition to securing approval from the Athletic Council. He
was assisted by board members Tony White and Mike
DiSabato in the screening and interviewing process. The
scholarship will be awarded at the Scholar-Athlete dinner on
May 24. On that night we will also recognize academic excellence
by awarding our second annual Varsity “O” Cups for
most improved and highest team GPA. Along with the associated
bragging rights, the Varsity “O” makes a $1000 contribution
to the coach’s discretionary fund for each winning team.
Last year’s winners were Ice Hockey and Diving. We are proud
of the way our student–athletes represent a great university in
competition AND in the classroom. We appreciate our wonderful
working relationship with the Student Academic
Support Services Office (SASSO) and the many opportunities
they provide us to help student athletes. The new SASSO
director, David Graham, recently visited one of our board
meetings to express his thanks to our members for their continued
support.
In addition to serving current student-athletes, we are excited
to offer two new services to our members. Please take a
moment to check out the opportunity to utilize state of the art
medical imaging and member discount featured in this issue.
We have received approval to offer Varsity Award rings to
members who meet Athletic Department criteria. Watch
future issues of this newsletter for details of this exciting project.
As you can see, your Varsity “O” Alumni Association continues
to seek new avenues to serve future and current members
while supporting a great university. We remain, Athletes
Helping Athletes.
GO BUCKS!!
