Football: Scarlet Pulls Away from Gray, 20-7, in Spring Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Rain did not deter fans from setting an Ohio State spring game attendance record for the third season in a row. A crowd of 76,346 braved the soggy conditions in Ohio Stadium to watch the Scarlet team defeat the Gray, 20-7, in the 2008 Spring Game.

Brian Hartline caught six passes for 82 yards to lead the Scarlet offensively. Taurian Washington had 71 yards receiving on four catches for the Gray's top offensive performance. Todd Boeckman completed 12-for-18 pass attempts for the Scarlet in the first half. He totaled a game-high 145 yards through the air despite throwing two interceptions.

Scarlet took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Boeckman finished a four-play, 53-yard drive with a quarterback sneak into the endzone. The highlight of the series was a 48-yard pass from Boeckman to Hartline, who made the diving catch on 2-yard line.

The Gray squad capitalized on a Ross Homan interception of Boeckman at the Gray 19. On the ensuing drive, Gray evened the score with 2:49 remaining in the second quarter on Washington’s 51-yard TD reception from Joe Bauserman, making it 7-7.

The score remained the same until the last three seconds of the half. Scarlet kicker Aaron Pettrey connected on a 48-yard attempt to give his squad a 10-7 advantage going into the locker rooms.

The Scarlet added to its lead with 23 seconds remaining in the third quarter two plays after quarterback Antonio Henton connected with Ray Small for a 30-yard competition to the Gray 3-yard line. Dan Herron crossed the goal line to extend the score to 17-7.

In the final minute, Scarlet tacked on a Mike Mattimoe 24-yard field goal (:41) to set the final score at 20-7.
